Now that Unsheathed (aka Sword of Coming, aka Swords, Come!)《劍來》has launched an official translation on Wuxiaworld, I thought I’d translate the cultivation realm tables on the Chinese wiki (Baike) for the novel. Keep in mind that these are my own translations based on my own knowledge, research, and translation preferences. These are not the official translations of these terms, as the novel has not gotten far enough along for those translated terms to be published yet. So the translations here are unofficial and tentative. I have kept the original Chinese text here to make it easier for those who can read Chinese to compare and understand for themselves (and correct whatever mistakes I’ve made) and to make it easier for someone to locate a term if needed.

I have also included some footnotes explaining some of the concepts and terms as many of these exist in real life Daoist practice. I encourage you to read them if you’d like to better understand the underlying concepts behind Daoist cultivation.

修行 Cultivation Realms

【下五境】
Five Lower Realms
又被稱為“登山五境”,牽引人體之外的天地元氣,來澆築、砥礪人體的皮肉筋骨血。
Also called “Five Mountain Climbing Realms”. Draws in primal1 qi from heaven and earth (i.e. the universe) to build and hone the body’s skin, flesh, tendons, bones, and blood.

大成境界,激發真氣時,皮膚呈現紫銅色。此境無視物理傷害。
Once achieving this realm, when perfected (aka true, aka realized) qi is roused, one’s skin appears the color of pure copper. In this realm, one is invulnerable to physical damage.
肉:【草根】
Flesh:
Grass Root
斬草不除根春風吹又生,寓意此境大成者出眾的血肉恢復能力。
If you don’t pull up the roots when you cut grass (weeds), then when the spring winds blow it will regrow. This is a metaphor for the outstanding ability for the adept’s flesh and blood to be restored.
筋:【柳筋】
Tendons:
Willow (Liu) Tendon
曾經有一位驚才絕豔的柳姓修士,單憑煉筋就直接登入上五境,成就無上仙身,堪稱前無古人後無來者。故而專門以柳筋命名此境。又有“留人境”的説法,因為許多奢望走捷徑的修士,誤入歧途,在這個境界上對柳姓修士遺留的殘缺秘籍,去鑽牛角尖,耽擱太久,貽誤終身。
Once there was an astoundingly talented cultivator surnamed Liu (willow) who ascended to the upper five realms directly by only refining (cultivating) his tendons, and he achieved a paramount transcendent2 body. This was unprecedented and hasn’t been repeated since. Hence, this realm was specially given the name Liu (willow) Tendon. It’s also called the “Left Behind Realm” because many cultivators possessed with extravagant hopes to make a shortcut go astray down this path. Cultivators can become obssessed with following Liu’s incomplete secret manual and if they stay in this realm too long, can bring about harm to themselves.
骨:【骨氣】
Bones:
Mettle (lit. bone qi)
來源於一位前輩修士“造就千金重骨、方有一兩氣”的説法。儒教修士在此境界,有得天獨厚的優勢,因為儒家重視養育浩然正氣,一般而言,牽引數量比其他人都要略多,質量也更好。
This stems from an old generation cultivator who said “achieve bones of a thousand gold for one tael (ounce) of qi”. Confucian cultivators have a natural advanage at this realm because Confucians focus on cultivating a noble, righteous spirit. Generally speaking, they draw in more [qi] than others, and better quality too.

Body:
Founding Furnace or Building a Hut
“人生天地間,體魄為熔爐”。算是一隻腳踏入修行的門檻,佛道兩教修士在此境界優勢最大。(這也是三教鼎立的原因所在)
In the human world, the body is a crucible”. Once stepping foot into this realm, Buddhist and Daoist cultivators have the biggest advantage. (This is also the reason for the existence of the Three Doctrines.)
【中五境】
Five Middle Realms
每個境界分上中下三重樓
Every realm is divided into upper, middle, and lower levels
/【洞府境】
Grotto Abode Realm3
府門洞開,即開竅納氣,開始從天地間汲取靈氣,人體三百六十五個竅穴,就像三百六十五座天然而生的洞天福地,這也是為何説人是萬靈之長。
The doors of the abode open wide, that is, the aperatures (acupoints) open and qi is received, drawing numinous4 qi from the universe (heaven and earth). The 365 acupoints of the human body are like the 365 naturally formed grotto-heavens and blessed lands. This is why it is said that man is the head of the myriad spirits (numens).
【觀海境】
Expansive Outlook Realm
取自“我登樓觀百川,入海即入我懷”之意,天地靈氣開始擴大人體經脈(如同最終入海的江河、又如同人間擴充驛路官道),靈氣漸漸凝聚、昇華,開始反哺肉身,從而使得修士延年益壽。尋常此境界練氣士能夠長壽至百歲高齡。
Taken from the meaning “I go to the top floor and look out on the waterways; where they enter the sea is where they enter my mind”. The numinous qi of the universe expands the body’s circulatory channels and meridians (similar to rivers emptying into the sea, and also like the expansive network of post roads and public roads). Numinous qi graudally coalesces, sublimates, and begins to replenish the corporeal body, thus extending the cultivator’s lifespan. Usually, qi-refining cultivators in this realm can live up to the advanced age of 100.
【龍門境】
Dragon Gate Realm
沉澱在丹田(氣海)的充沛靈氣,最終凝聚成一股精華氣息,在體內逆流而上,如同鯉魚跳龍門,成則化龍,敗則遍體鱗傷。修士若是衝關失敗,就會一口氣跌回洞府境界,丹田氣海徹底乾涸。所以這一關隘是修士的第二個大門檻,龍門境修士一輩子有三次機會,所以有“事不過三”的説法。一旦三次都失敗,一輩子就只能止步於洞府境界。
Abundant numinous qi settles in the dantian5 (sea of qi), finally coalescing into a stream of quintessential qi-breath that courses against the current inside the body and up, just like a carp that jumps over the Dragon Gate. If it succeeds and makes it over, then it is transformed into a dragon. It it fails, its scales are battered and bruised. If a cultivator fails to break through this juncture, then in one fell swoop he will fall back to the Grotto Abode Realm, and the sea of qi in his dantian will be completely dried up. So this critical barries is the cultivator’s second major threshold. Dragon Gate Realm cultivators have three chances in their lifetime to break through, so it is said one cannot “go more than three times”. One one fails the third time, for the rest of his life he will be able to go no further than the Grotto Abode Realm.
【金丹境】
Golden Elixir Realm
‘‘結成金丹客,方是我輩人”,又被形容為是“鯉魚跳龍門”之後的“點睛”。整座氣海凝聚濃縮為一顆金丹,結丹的體內意境,修士之間各有不同。有些修士天才,結丹時氣勢宏偉,甚至會引來天地異象。練氣士各自的“丹室”之間,大小有着巨大差異,優劣也有云泥之別。但也存在着“大而空”、“小卻妙”等特殊情況,天意難測,莫過於此。
“Becoming a golden elixir6 adept is our way”. Also described as the “finishing touch” after “the carp jumps over the Dragon Gate”. One’s entire sea of qi coalesces and concentrates into a golden elixir. Cultivators have different manifestations for their internally-formed elixir. Some cultivators are gifted, and the elixir forms with grand fervor, even drawing in different universe phenomenon (translator note: Not quite sure about this part). Qi-refining cultivators vary vastly in the sizes of their “elixir chambers”, some better or worse than others. But there are also exceptional cases of “vast and empty” or “small and subtle”. The will of Heaven is difficult to fathom, that’s all.
【元嬰境】
Primal Infant Realm7
修士養育出一尊陽神或者陰神,識海之內如有稚童居住,儒教修士温養出來的這位“稚童”,或捧書狀或捧玉笏、或身穿各種補子官服,甚至有可能手持鎮國玉璽。
Cultivators nurture a yang spirit or an yin-spirit.8 If in the ocean of the mind a young child resides, this “young child” that the Confucian cultivator warmly nurtured can present written documents or hold a jade tablet or wear any kind of official garb. It can even hold the jade imperial seal of authority over a nation.
【上五境】
Upper Five Realms
又被譽為“長生五境”
Also honored as the “Five Longevity Realms”
/【玉璞境】
Uncarved Jade Realm
練氣大成,返璞歸真,同時使得肉身趨於圓滿,修煉成“無垢琉璃之軀”、“大羅金仙之身”等,天然能夠水火不懼、萬邪不侵。壽命最少五百年,最多八百年,甚至千年。因此修士的圈子裏,有“不怕遇到老,就怕遇到小”、“山中一甲子、世上已千年”等説法。道教主宰的“青冥天下”,中樞為玄都祖庭,此間修士中高層,多是玉璞境界。不懼任何污穢氣息的入侵身體,對靈氣的積累逐漸達到一個瓶頸,所以山上修行山下修行,已經區別不大,遠比元嬰境界修士的“不動如山”,要更為靈活隨意。此境分天地兩層境界。
When qi-refining is complete, one returns to purity and perfection, and at the same time caused the corporeal body to tend toward completion where one cultivates a “body of spotless glass” or a “Great Veil Golden Transcendent body”,9 and one is naturally impervious to fire or water, and the myriad evils can not invade. One lives as least to 500 years old, at most 800 or even 1,000 years old. Therefore, within the circle of cultivators there are the sayings “Don’t fear running into an old person, fear running into a young person” and “a cycle of 60 years in the mountains equals 1,000 years on earth”. The center of the Daoist-ruled “Blue Depths World” is the Ancestral Court of the Mysterious Metropolis. Here, mid- and high-level cultivators are mostly in the Uncarved Jade Realm. They do not fear any foul qi invading their bodies, and their accumulation of numinous qi is gradually bottlenecked, so there is no longer much difference whether one cultivates in the mountains or cultivations down off the mountains. They are much more flexible and unconstrained than the Primal Infant Realm cultivators who are “motionless as a mountain”. This realm is divided into two levels, Heaven and Earth.
【仙人境】
Transcendent & Mankind Realm
分左右兩個境界,仙在前、人在後,前者是説如今修煉得道,已經高高在上。(實則真相是修士需要以人間各種氣數作為進階食物,靈氣已經無法提升境界)後者則是提醒此境大神通修士,莫要忘記先人後仙的本心初衷。(實則是俗人之氣數、甚至是尋常底層練氣士的氣數,都已經填不飽這些仙人的肚子了,必須吞噬整個一國一朝代的磅礴氣運。)
Divided into Left and Right realms, The Transcendent Realm first, then the Mankind Realm. The former is for those cultivators who have attained the Dao and are already remote from the masses. (Actually, the real situation is that cultivators need various kinds of fortune10 from the human world to serve as their food, as numinous qi is no longer enough for them to level up to the next realm). The latter is a reminder to the extraordinarily powerful cultivators of this realm that they must not forget the original intent that it’s first man, then transcendent. (Actually, the fortune of ordinary persons, even the common low-level fortune of qi-refiners, is no longer sufficient to fill the transcendents’ bellies; they must swallow the entire bounless fate of a nation or dynasty.)
【飛昇境】
Flying Ascension Realm
已是“天下”之巔峯頂點,來世也不過如此(只是世人看法,其實這個境界的修士都發現一個尷尬困境,自身已經根本沒有來世可言了,所以只能破開天地屏障,飛昇而去,去往傳説中的天庭,即所謂位列仙班。)只是一入此境界,便會被天道察覺,認為是天地之大盜巨寇,必須除之後快,為天地不容。所以這個境界的頂尖練氣士,輕易都不會現世,否則就要被迫飛昇,一旦失敗,就是魂飛魄散的慘況。所以被“那位讀書人”譏諷為“千年王八萬年龜”。
Already the apex, the summit of the “world”. Even in the next life one cannot go further than this. (Only from the common person’s perspective, actually the cultivators of this realm discover an awkward situation, in that there is no longer any next life to speak of for them, so they can only break through the protective screen of heaven and earth and flying up and ascend to the legendary Celestial (aka Heavenly) Court, aka the so-called rank of transcendents.) Only once one enters this realm, they will be noticed by the Way of Heaven11 and will be regarded as great bandits and immense invaders of the universe and must be eliminated at once; the universe cannot tolerate them.Therefore, the top qi-refining cultivators in this realm do not show themselves in the world unless necessary, lest they be forced into ascending. Should they fail in this, their cloudsoul and whitesouls will be disperes and they will die tragically.12 Therefore it is ridiculed by “that scholar” as “a thousand years a turtle, a myriad years a tortoise”.13
【失傳二境】
Two Lost Realms
任何修士都三緘其口,始終秘不示人,天機不可泄露。一直被揣測為“已證天道”、得以躋身“天上之天”的天庭,是謂“天仙”了,真正做到與天地同壽。十三境練氣士需通過合道進入此境。
Every cultivator has their lips sealed on these realms, never revealing the secret to others, never breathing a word about it. It’s always guessed to be “proof of the Way of Heaven”, where one has ascended to the Heavenly (aka Celestial) Court in the “Heaven above Heaven” (i.e. the highest heaven) and become a so-called “Celestial Transcendent” and will truly live as long as heaven and earth abide.14 Qi-refining cultivators of the thirteenth realm must merge with the Dao to enter this realm.

由粗入細。大成境界,肌膚紋理精密,如通篆刻銘文。拓寬經脈,“開山”境,打熬骨骼,滴水穿石。
From coarse to fine. When this realm is completed, the lines (grain) in one’s skin and muscles will be precise and refined, like a seal engraving. The channels and meridians will be broadened. The “Cutting into the Mountain” Realm, toughening the bone structure through constant perseverance.
水銀境
Quicksilver Realm
血液濃稠如水銀,重量卻更加輕盈,氣血凝聚合一。突破門檻,需要渡過一劫,叫“泥菩薩過江”。
One’s blood thickens like quicksilver (mercury), and it becomes lighter and qi and blood coalesce and merge into one. To break through this threshold one must undergo a tribulation called “Clay Buddha Crosses the River”.

Also called the Minor Master Realm. The outstanding people of this realm can cultivate what Buddhists call the Invincible Diamond body, or what the Daoists call the Spotless Glass, Great Veil Golden Transcendent body.
羽化境
Wing Sprouting Realm
能夠虛空懸停,御風而飛。故而又稱“遠遊境”。
One can hover in the air and fly, riding the wind. Hence it is also called the “Far Roaming Realm”.
山巔境
Mountain Top Realm
最後一重境界,被譽為“止境宗師”:形容腳下的武道已經走到盡頭。雖不至於搬山倒海,卻亦是能夠拳裂城牆、掌劈大江,一身雄渾罡氣,百邪不侵,千軍辟易。肉體強橫至極,猶勝佛家羅漢之身。練氣士一旦被近身,十丈之內,除非有上品護身法寶或者更高,否則必死無疑。
this final realm, also honored as the “End Limit Master”. It means that ones martial path has reached the end. Although not able to move mountains or overturn seas, one can still smash a wall with one’s fist, or cleave the Great River (Yangtze) with a chop of one’s hand, and one possesses forceful “dipper” qi19, impervious to all evils, causing an army of a thousand to retreat in fright. The physical body is strong as can be, surpassing the body of a Buddhist arhat. Whenever a qi-refining cultivator gets near, within ten staves,20 unless one has a top-grade magical treasure to protect themselves, or is higher ranked, they will die for sure.
【止境】
End Realm
武道第十境,依次分為氣盛、歸真、神道三個小層次,一洲武夫達到該境界者寥寥無幾,達到者無一不是一洲武運昌隆之象徵。
The 10th martial path realm, divided in order into the three levels of Vigorous, Revert to the Perfected, and Spiritual Way (Dao). Very few warriors of the land can reach this realm, and anyone who does is an emblem of prosperous martial fortune.

武道第十一境,達此境界者可謂壽與天齊,實力可與山巔修士比肩,已知目前僅有兵家始祖和遠古天庭中的五位至高中的某位曾到達此境,因此武夫道路又被稱作“斷頭路”。
The 11th martial path realm. Those who reach this realm can be be said to live as long as heaven endures, their strength on par with a Mountain Top cultivator. Only the military ancestor(?) and the Five Highest of the Celestial Court of remote antiquity have every reached this realm. Therefore this path for warriors is called the “Road to a Beheading”.

Notes

  1. 元, primal, primordial, origin. Refers to the Dao, the point in which the universe had not yet been formed, when yin and yang were not yet differentiated. This is the “one” the “dao” that cultivators are trying to get back to, the perfect state when nothing yet existed but there was the potential for everything to exist. So anything with “primal” before it, anything that uses 元, is talking about this state. Primal qi is the qi that existed before you were born, before heaven and earth were created. This is also called 先天 xiantian, which means “before heaven”. As in, before heaven was created. Translators often use too modern terminology in rendering this as “innate” or even worse, “connate”. After we are born, the qi we breathe and use is 後天 houtian, “after heaven”. After heaven was created. Cultivators in real life and in these webnovels, are trying to draw in primal qi rather than “after heaven” qi, because they want to essentially reverse time (figuratively) and go back to the beginning, back to the origin (元), back when the Dao was one. To do that they need to convert themselves into a being of pure yang-qi, because yang is associated with heaven and yin is associated with earth (earth in these contexts means the netherworld, not the ground we’re standing on). So they need to refine (煉 lian) their bodies, remove the yin impurities as one refines metal in a forge, removing the dross. Because it is said that when the Dao differentiated into qi, it formed yang qi, which being light, ascended and formed the heavens. Yin qi, being heavy, sank and formed the “earth” (netherworld). Later, in between them the qi mingled and mixed together to form the myriad things (including mankind). So heven, earth, and mankind in the middle. If you are a being of pure yin qi, you die and become a ghost. A being of pure yang qi ascends to the heavens.
  2. Transcendent translates 仙 (xian). This is usually rendered by webnovel translators as “immortal”, but actually in the Chinese cosmogony/worldview there is no such thing as “forever” since eventually the universe will all collapse back into the undifferentiated Dao and the cyle will start anew. Transcendents are like transhumans (and the higher level ones like posthumans) in a way, still human but a rung higher on the ladder. They do not live forever. The best they can achieve is to live as long as heaven and earth (the universe), meaning live until the universe collapses back into the undifferentiated Dao. If their cultivation is sufficiently high, they will have merged with the Dao by this point and will endure, but not in the same corporeal or spiritual form as before. Anyway, when I say “transcendent”, I mean “immortals”.

  4. Numinous translates 靈, which is usually translated “spirit”, but spirit is used for many terms. Scholars and writers on Daoism tend to use “numinous” to differentiate it from others. This is the vital principle, the life principle, spiritual power of potency.
  5. 丹田 is dantian, literally “cinnabar field”. Also called “elixir field” because 丹, which is cinnabar, by synecdoche means elixir because cinnabar is one of the most important ingredients in making elixirs. Webnovel translators often translate 丹 as “pill”, but that is incorrect. It’s not a “pill furnace”, it’s an “elixir furnace”. A pill is just the form that the elixir is usually made into after it’s made. When alchemists made elixirs, then did so in an egg-shaped reaction vessel heated in a furnace for a prescribed amount of time and at certain temperatures. It was an elaborat ritual. When the elixir was finished, they opened the egg and the elixir would be stuck to the upper “ceiling” of the egg, the rocks and metal ingredients having sublimated in the reaction vessel. the efflorescences stuck to the ceiling, which were then scooped out with a spoon. You could eat it off the spoon directly, but often they were made into pills for convenience. The word for pill is 丸. Now, having said that, it is possible given certain contexts for 丹 to refer specifically to a pill, but the word itself does not mean pill. It refers to the elixir as a whole, but literally means “cinnabar”. It’s like when you say “hey man, nice wheels”, you don’t just mean the wheels, you mean the whole car. So cinnabar means elixir here. Not pill.
  6. 金丹, golden elixir, is often translated “golden core” for some reason. Because of its central importance I guess. But there’s no need to use the word “core” and thus obscure the terms. I’ve already explained 丹 above and why it means elixir. This term can also be thought of as “gold and cinnabar”. Gold is highly valued in Chinese alchemy because it does not react much to other things, therefore symbolizing immortality. A test was performed on a completed elixir, and if the test portion turned to gold, the elixir was a success.
  7. 元嬰, primal or primordial or original infant, is usually translated “nascent soul”. However, such a translation annihilates the imagery from the term, and the infant imagery is very important in Daoism. Imagery in general is very important in Daoism since visualization when meditating is one of the chief practices. The notion of forming a child within yourself that is you, is a concept very old in real life Daoism, though the term “primal infant” was popularized in the 1932 wuxia/xianxia novel Sword Xia of the Shu Mountains by Huanzhu Louzhu. In real life the term is usually called “transcendent embryo” or “Dao embryo/fetus”, etc. “Nascent” is all wrong. Because nascent means coming into existence or emerging, but that is the opposite of what “primal” means here. I explained 元 above already. It is the Dao, that is the perfect, fully formed (though formless) Dao. It is not just coming into being, It is the complete, perfect thing one wants to go back to. So nascent is simply inaccurate. Soul instead of infant or baby is misleading. It’s not just some intangible soul, but you. It can fly and interact corporeally (is that a word?) with other beings. It can divide itself, “clone itself” if you will, and be in multiple places at once. Please translators, stop destroying Daoist imagery! Retain the infant!Don’t reduce cool, real life Daoist concepts to generic fantasy terms.
  8. I wrote “an yin” instead of “a yin” because yin 陰 is pronounced “in” or “een” depending on your accent. It’s not actually a “y” sound at the beginning. Yang 陽 is pronounced “yahng”, the vowel sound the same as in “yawn”.
  9. Great Veil, 大羅, can also be translated as Great Net or Great Canopy. It refers to the highest heaven in certain Daoist schools that is above and encompasses all others, like a veil or net draped over the other heavens.
  10. Or fate? Not really sure what this refers to.
  11. aka Heavenly Law, Will of Heaven, Dao of Heaven, etc. It’s important to remember here that this is not some person or deity who is like hey now, you can’t be doing that. I’m going to punish you. No, there is no consciousness here, it is just the natural way of things. When you “defy” heaven, you are not going against a ruler, you are violating the natural way of things.
  12. 魂 is cloudsoul and 魄 is whitesoul, so named by scholars because of the cloud and white radicals used in the characters, respectively. In the Chinese view, a person has multiple “souls”. The cloudsoul is the spiritual soul; in death, it disperses to the heavens. Said to be three in number. The whitesoul is the carnal soul, which returns to the earth when one dies. Said to be seven in number. The death mentioned here is a permanent one.
  13. Turtles are long-lived, but calling someone a turtle is calling them a cuck or a bastard.
  14. Remember how I said earlier that there’s no such thing as forever? Note here it says as long as heaven and earth. Eventually even the heavens and the earth/netherworld will revert back to the undifferentiated Dao, the “one”.
  15. aka Martial Dao, Martial Way, etc. It just means the way of cultivating martial arts.
  16. Or body tempering. Technically tempering means hardening, but it’s not just hardening the body but refining it as well. But the sense of strengthening the body is certainly appropriate here, so many translators prefer to use body tempering.
  17. Literally clay embryo”, the unformed substance you start with when making something out of clay.
  18. literally “wooden fetus”, this is a lacquerware term that refers to the wooden base material to which lacquer is then applied.
  19. I haven’t thought of a better translation for this at the moment, but it literally means Dipper, as in the Big Dipper. It reders here to strong, high altitude winds. So it means strong forcewind. Very strong qi, when one strikes the qi is like a gust of wind coming out of the body.
  20. A unit of measure equal to about 3.33 meters. The character, 丈 is cognate with 仗, which means walking stick, staff, stave, etc, thus the translation. I feel that since Chinese has its own unique system of measurement, it’s appropriate for it to have its own translations as well, rather than always being forced to wear Western terminology.
